In this blog post, we will be reviewing the latest version of Apple TV 4K, which was released in 2022. This streaming device has been updated with new features, improved performance, and a sleek new design. We will take a look at the device's technical specifications, its user interface, and the streaming options available. We will also compare it to other popular streaming devices on the market to see how it stacks up. Whether you're in the market for a new streaming device or just curious about the latest offerings from Apple, this review will provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision.

APPLE TV 4K (2022):  Overview

Apple has finally answered the call of many consumers by releasing a more budget-friendly streaming device. The new Apple TV 4K, which was announced in October 2022, comes in two different storage options with prices starting at $129 / £149 / AU$205. This is a significant price drop from its previous iteration. The new Apple TV 4K is available in two different configurations: a 64GB option that only supports Wi-Fi connectivity, and a 128GB model that comes equipped with both Wi-Fi and Ethernet for streaming.

It seamlessly integrates with an iPhone for setup and control, and its AirPlay output allows for easy connection with up to two sets of AirPods, making it a perfect addition for anyone who is deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem. The new device is also more compact than its predecessor, thanks to the elimination of an internal fan. The design remains similar, with the exception of the replacement of the Lightning port on the Siri remote control with a USB-C port for charging.

APPLE TV 4K (2022) REVIEW: PRICE AND RELEASE DATE

The new Apple TV 4K (2022) has hit the market with a lower price point than ever before. The basic model, which comes with 64GB storage and Wi-Fi connectivity, is available for purchase at $129 / £149 / AU$205. For those looking for an upgrade, there is also an option that includes 128GB storage and Gigabit Ethernet for $149 / £169 / AU$240.

Both versions are available now and were released in November 2022, shortly after the October announcement. While the Apple TV 4K may still be considered pricey when compared to other streaming devices on the market, it is now more competitive with other premium options from companies like Roku and Amazon. The new model now supports HDR10+ which brings it on par with the features offered by its competitors. The on-screen interface and Siri voice search features are also top-notch.

APPLE TV 4K (2022) REVIEW: DESIGN

The new Apple TV 4K has undergone a redesign and now boasts a more compact form factor compared to its 2021 predecessor. This change was achieved by eliminating the internal fan and adopting a passive design. The device maintains its square, puck-like appearance, with a shiny Apple logo adorning the blacktop surface.

The back of the device features ports for HDMI, and for the 128GB version, Gigabit Ethernet is also included. Additionally, the 128GB version is equipped with Thread Mesh Networking technology, which is used by the new Matter smart home device standard. Another noteworthy feature for those who use the new Apple HomePod 2 as speakers in their system is the HDMI eARC support, which allows for routing audio from devices connected to the TV back to the Apple TV 4K and then to wirelessly connected HomePods.

The Siri remote control that comes with the Apple TV 4K has not undergone any significant design changes, but the company has replaced the Lightning connector used for charging with a USB-C port, which gives it a measure of future-proofing as USB-C is becoming more prevalent in new Apple products. Apple also claims that the remote's enclosure is made of 100% recycled aluminum.

Final Thoughts:

When shopping for a streaming device, the Apple TV 4K should be considered alongside other top-of-the-line options like the Amazon Fire TV Cube and Roku Ultra, as its price point falls in the same range. Although features between the three devices are relatively similar, the Apple TV 4K and Amazon Fire TV Cube offer more comprehensive HDR support.

However, what sets the Apple TV 4K apart is its seamless integration with other Apple products, such as the ability to control it using an iPhone, and its ability to link with AirPods and HomePods for wireless Spatial Audio. If you already own any of these products, the Apple TV 4K may be worth the investment, but if you are not an Apple product owner, other streaming devices like the Roku family or Amazon Fire TV Sticks may offer better value for your money.
